THE RISE OF HOME-MADE CIDER IN ASTURIAS/ El auge de la sidra casera en Asturias

Homemade cider is a trend and is rapidly recovering the artisan tradition in Asturian towns and villages, but with hitherto unknown quality standards. According to Oscar Florez, representative of the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Asturian Cider, there are more than five hundred amateur cider makers in the Principality, many of them young people concerned with producing an increasingly better and more carefully crafted product, which could well be described as «signature cider». «Homemade cider is different and has much more personality than commercial cider, as it is made according to each producer’s own taste», Florez explains.
Every year the number of official competitions for the best home-made cider increases, with twelve being held this year in Colunga, Gijon, Gozon, Mieres, Nava, Onis, Piloña, Ribadesella, Salas, Sariego, Siero and Villaviciosa. The top three in each competition qualified directly for the Selection of the Best Home-made Cider of Asturias, a competition held in Villaviciosa and named after Mundo Collada, the deceased oenologist of El Gaitero who was one of the pioneers of the process to recover the artisanal production of cider. In addition, amateur cider makers from non-competitive municipalities could also register for the event, with a maximum of three per municipality.

On Saturday 30 September, the town of Huerres hosted the VI Colunga Homemade Cider Competition, part of the town’s Rosario Festivities. The final of the contest took place choosing between the ten pre-selected varieties from around thirty cider makers, with Ana Medio being the winner. The public attending the event was able to see the quality of the local drink by tasting, free of charge, all the participating ciders with the purchase of a commemorative glass of the event.

The production of home-made cider in Asturias has been growing steadily over the last few years and many councils have associations that support artisanal cider production. This year, despite the low apple harvest, a large number of competitions were held in our region to highlight the value of this traditional cider, the origin of the cider made in industrial cider mills.

On 19th March, the I Espicha Cider Competition was held in Ribera de Arriba, organised by the Artisan Cidermakers Association from Caudal.

Espicha cider is the new cider, the first cider of the year, without racking and which in councils such as Nalón and Caudal is traditionally served without pouring from the top, at the most at about 25 centimetres, which means a substantial change in its flavour.

Of the 28 participating producers, the eight best ciders were chosen, with the top three being awarded prizes:
