After the restrictions imposed for two years, the XXIII edition of Villaviciosa Cider Festival was finally celebrated in its full expression on 3rd September, with the participation of the 11 local cidermakers: Buznego, Castañon, Coro, Cortina, El Gobernador, Frutos, J. Tomas, Los Gemelos, M. Busto, M. Vigon and Vallina.
Después de las restricciones impuestas durante dos años, finalmente se celebró la XXIII edición de la Fiesta de la Sidra en Villaviciosa en toda su expresión, con la participación de los 11 llagares maliayeses: Buznego, Castañón, Coro, Cortina, El Gobernador, Frutos, J. Tomás, Los Gemelos, M. Busto, M. Vigón y Vallina.
During the day, around 3,000 litres of cider from these cideries could be tasted free of charge, after purchasing the commemorative glass of the festival with the logo of the candidacy of Asturian cider culture as Intangible Heritage of Humanity and the image of the pre-Romanesque church of San Salvador de Priesca. The prize for the Most Beautiful Label 2022 was also awarded by the Asturian Cider Collecting Group, which this year went to Buznego cider mill.
Durante dicha jornada se pudieron degustar de forma gratuita cerca de 3.000 litros de sidra de dichos llagares, previa compra del vaso conmemorativo del festival con el logo de la candidatura de la cultura sidrera asturiana como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad y la imagen de la iglesia prerrománica de San Salvador de Priesca. También se procedió a la entrega del premio a la Etiqueta Más Guapina 2022 a cargo del Grupo Astur de Coleccionismo Sidrero, que este año recayó en el Llagar Buznego.

On Monday 12th September the XXXVIII Regional Natural Cider Competition was held, in which Vallina cider mill, with its PDO cider Valle de Peon, won out over the 43 participating ciders. For the first time since this contest began in 1971, a second prize was awarded to Sidra Quelo PDO and a third prize shared by Val d’Ornon- Sidra Menendez PDO cider- and M. Norniella- Sidra Huerces-, which tied for third place.
Dentro de las festividades de Nª Sra. del Portal, celebradas entre el 9 y el 14 de septiembre, tuvieron lugar dos eventos sidreros con gran tradición:
El lunes 12 de septiembre se celebró el XXXVIII Concurso Regional de Sidra Natural en el que el llagar Vallina, con su sidra DOP Valle de Peón, se impuso a las 43 sidras participantes. Por primera vez desde que este certamen comenzó a celebrarse en 1971, se otorgó un segundo premio a Sidra Quelo DOP y un tercer premio compartido por Val d’Ornón- la DOP de Sidra Menéndez- y M. Norniella- Sidra Huerces-, que empataron en el tercer puesto.

On Tuesday 13th September the XXIX Villaviciosa Cider Pouring Competition, scoring for the Official Asturias Cider Pouring Championship, took place. Salvador Ondo, from Tierra Astur cider bar, was the winner. Second place went to Wilkin Aquiles, from Avenida cider house, and third place went to Jorge Vargas, from La Montera Picona de Ramón cider bar.
In the local cider pourers’ category, the winner was Alejandro Diaz La Tortuga cider bar and second prize went to Jose Manuel, from Casa Mery cider house.
El martes 13 de septiembre se celebró el XXIX Concurso de Escanciadores de Villaviciosa, puntuable para el Campeonato Oficial de Escanciadores de Asturias. Salvador Ondó, de sidrería Tierra Astur, se alzó con la victoria. El segundo puesto fue para Wilkin Aquiles, de la sidrería Avenida, y en tercer lugar se situó Jorge Vargas, de la sidrería La Montera Picona de Ramón.
En la categoría de escanciadores locales, el ganador fue Alejandro Díaz de la sidrería La Tortuga y el segundo premio recayó en José Manuel, de la sidrería Casa Mery.
Villaviciosa has just celebrated their local festivities from 10th to 15th september, again following the COVID-19 health procedures, when this year’s Best Asturian Natural Cider was chosen.
Last Monday, Cabuenes cider mill became the winner in the current edition among 36 contestants. The cider mill located in Gijon obtained 85 points with their DOP cider in the XXXVII Cider Contest, which made their owner Diego Aguera, from Breceña, Villaviciosa, feel proud of winning this award «at home».
They are also thinking of releasing a commemorative label on the achievement, as they had already won the contest 10 years ago, so it was a booster for their daily effort to produce the best quality cider.
Villaviciosa acaba de celebrar sus fiestas locales del 10 al 15 de septiembre, de nuevo siguiendo el protocolo sanitario impuesto por el COVID-19, durante las cuales se escogió la Mejor Sidra Asturiana Natural de este año.
El pasado lunes, el llagar Cabueñes se convirtió en ganador de la presente edición entre 36 participantes. El llagar ubicado en Gijón obtuvo 85 puntos con su sidra DOP en el XXXVII Concurso de Sidra, lo que hizo a su dueño Diego Agüera, de Breceña, Villaviciosa, sentirse orgulloso de ganar este premio «en casa».
Incluso están pensando en sacar una etiqueta conmemorativa de dicho logro, ya que ya habían ganado el concurso hace diez años, lo cual constituye un impulso para reforzar su esfuerzo diario en producir la sidra de mejor calidad.

Villaviciosa, one of the most renowned cider spots in Asturias, is celebrating their local festivities, from Friday 11th to Wednesday 16th September.
Following the procedures laid down by the health authorities, two of the most important cider contests have been held in camera, with access control and limited seating these days.

Siguiendo las indicaciones establecidas por las autoridades sanitarias, se han celebrado estos días dos de los concursos de sidra más importantes, a puerta cerrada, con control de acceso y aforo limitado.
The XXVII edition of the Official Pourers Contest took place on 12th September with 25 contestants. Salvador Ondo became the winner for the fifth time, while Wilkin Aquiles ended up in second position followed by Andres Menendez. This last one was also awarded as Best Local Pourer, with Chema Pezon in second place.
La XXVII edición del Concurso Oficial de Escanciadores tuvo lugar el 12 de septiembre con 25 participantes. Salvador Ondó se alzó como ganador por quinta vez, mientras que Wilkin Aquiles finalizó en segunda posición seguido por Andrés Menéndez. Éste último también fue galardonado como Mejor Escanciador Local, con Chema Pezón en segundo lugar.
The XXXVI edition of the Best Natural Cider Contest was held on 14th September with 37 participant cidermills, after the cut-off tastings which took place on 9th and 10th September respectively. This time it was Val d’Boides, Castañon PDO cider, the one which won the Silver Apple in the contest.
La XXXVI edición del Concurso de Mejor Sidra Natural se llevó a cabo el 14 de septiembre con 37 llagares participantes, tras las catas de corte celebradas el 9 y 10 de septiembre respectivamente. En esta ocasión fue Val d’Boides, la DOP de Castañón, la que ganó la Manzana de Plata en el concurso.
The previous weekend, from 1st to 10th September, the prestigious photographer Xurde Margaride paid a tribute to 11 Asturian cidermakers in charge of cidermills Buznego, Castañon, Coro, Cortina, El Gobernador, Frutos, J.Tomas, Los Gemelos, M. Busto, M. Vigon and Vallina. The artist also presented the exhibition called «La Nuesa Sidra» («Our cider»), which showed the different stages in our traditional and unique cidermaking.
La semana previa, del 1 al 10 de septiembre, el prestigioso fotógrafo Xurde Margaride homenajeó a 11 llagareros asturianos al frente de los llagares Buznego, Castañón, Coro, Cortina, El Gobernador, Frutos, J. Tomás, Los Gemelos, M. Busto, M. Vigón y Vallina. El artista presentó además la exhibición denominada “La Nuesa Sidra”, que mostraba las diferentes etapas en la elaboración de nuestra sidra tradicional, única en el mundo.
