POMUM CUP 2025

POMUM CUP CHILE 2025

In Chile, cider—known as chicha in its most traditional form—is mainly produced in the Biobío and Los Lagos regions, and its production process involves the spontaneous fermentation of native apples. It is sold between February and June at local markets and fairs.

Temuco, capital of Chile’s Araucanía region, was the venue for the first edition of the Pomum Cup, the Latin American Cider Cup, between 17th and 20th July this year. Organised by Sidra Tencai, Bodega Ergo and sommelier Andres Gonzalez Cuadra, the event brought together experts, producers and cider lovers from around the world who, on the opening day, shared their technical and cultural knowledge at the Cider Congress.

On 18th July, twelve international judges evaluated a total of 53 Chilean, Peruvian, Argentinean and Norwegian ciders divided into five categories: common, heirloom, specialty, strong and European-style cider.

The following day, a guided tour of the Tencai cider house—located in the Mapuche territory of Truf Truf—was conducted by René Galindo, where participants were able to learn first-hand about its artisanal production and enjoy its ciders.

The day continued with the Cider Board meeting held at the Biergarten Klein restaurant, with an exhibition and tasting open to the public, as well as a bottle sharing.

On 20th July, participants visited the Quebrada del Chucao cider house in the Huiscapi region, which specialises in making cider from wild apples from southern Chile and advocates the revival of the European cider-making tradition.

This was followed by a visit to Magritte Cider, located next to the Villarrica volcano and lake, a family business whose ciders are inspired by their Asturian ancestors and made with Limona and Reineta apples.
