GIJON HOMEMADE CIDER ASSOCIATION/ Asociación de Sidra Casera de Gijón

On Friday 31st January, Ruedes hosted the first meeting to create Gijon Homemade Cider Association with the presence of cider producers from the parishes of Ruedes, Porceyo, Sotiello, Peñaferruz, Somio, Cabueñes, La Pedrera, Pinzales, Deva, Mareo and Llantones.

A month later, on 28th February, the constitution of the association was made official, an event attended by around thirty producers and lovers of homemade cider, and whose unofficial name will be Culete Moyau, in reference to the nickname by which the locals of Gijon are known.

The meeting, which took place in the Ruedes neighbours’ social club, served to allocate the positions of what will be the first board of directors of the entity, which will be chaired by Manuel Angel Castro Garcia, a producer from Carbainos (Cenero), with Alejandro Pidal Costales as vice-president and Mercedes Lopez Gonzalez as secretary, as well as six vocal members: Eduardo Alcazar, Luis Sariego -who is also the president of the Piloña Association-, Eduardo Vazquez Coto, Ricardo Garcia, Paula Rojas and Rufino Perez.

Manuel Angel Castro started making cider at home five years ago and will be the chairman of an entity that will collectively promote all the activities related to the world of cider – apple picking, apple tree pruning, making and promoting competitions as is done in other parishes.

Aware that Gijon needed its own association, they defend that the home-made cider makers are the main promoters of cider as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as they elaborate it under the tradition, culture and love for our ancestral drink.
