MOTHERS OF CIDER 2025/ Madres de la Sidra 2025

It was 2016 when the first “Sidra Sobre la Madre” (Cider on its Lees) was released for sale, as a tribute to Vicente Trabanco and the ancestral way of making cider.

With a limited production, it is the first cider of the new harvest, a young, fresh and fruity, whose main difference is that it has not been racked, that is to say, it has always remained in contact with the ‘mother’ (lees) and has not been changed barrels. Going back to the origins, as tradition dictates.

Trabanco’s ‘Sidra sobre la Madre’ became the first Asturian cider to show a best-before date, as the cidermaker considers that it is at its best from May to September.

Since 2019, a charity gala has been held, this year in favour of Galban Association dedicated to children with cancer, in which awards are given to the Mothers of Cider, women who, due to their career, are a reference in the cider sector.

In this edition, my good friend and best cook Lorena Hernandez was distinguished as Mother of Cider, for her good work at the helm of the cookers in the cider bar Urbies 7+2 in Gijon. For her, cider is not just a drink, but ‘a culture that must be understood, cared for and respected’.
