I GASCONA HOME-MADE CIDER MAKING TASTING/ I Preba de Sidra Casera de Gascona

The first edition of Gascona Homemade Cider Tasting took place in Oviedo on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th May, with the participation of producers from Alto Nalon, Aviles, Cabranes, Castrillon, Caudal, Colunga, Corvera, Gijon, Gozon, Llanes, Muño, Nava, Onis, Oviedo, Parres, Piloña, Ribadedeva, Ribadesella, Sariego and Villaviciosa.

Organised by the Asturian Federation of Homemade Cider (FASCAS), the event had a great popular reception, distributing more than 7,000 litres of this traditional drink made in an artisan way that attendees could vote to decide the best of this edition.

On the first day, a round table with experts was held to discuss the present and future of home-made cider and whose demands can be summed up in the desire for unity in the sector.

As a member of the Homemade Cider Association of Gijon -also known as Culete Moyau-, I couldn’t be prouder to say that we were the winners, as it is a recently created organisation and this recognition contributes to our expansion and desire to continue improving day by day.

Second place went to the council of Nava and third place went to Parres. And the best of all is that this is the least of it. Because the comradeship that exists among home-made cider producers from all over Asturias is worthy of praise.

In the words of Avelino Fuentes, president of the Spanish Federation of Homemade Cider, «every commercial cider mill started from a homemade cider maker, we are the basis of everything. That is the true cider culture, that of sharing and enjoying with friends». To this purpose, a commemorative glass was on offer for the modest price of €5 to taste all the Asturian essence that home-made cider represents.

There was also an exhibition of cider making tools, activities for children, folk and traditional Asturian music, as well as a performance by the group Cum Laude.

The following day, Sunday 25th May, the XXV edition of Gascona Cider Festival was held.

More than 10,000 people came together on this day to taste cider from 17 commercial cider makers from Asturias, being the winners Sidra Vigon (Villaviciosa) by the professional jury and Viuda de Angelon (Nava) by the public.

The second and third places officially went to La Llarada (Tineo) and Sidra Muñiz (Siero), respectively. The popular vote awarded second place to Sidra Cortina (Villaviciosa) and third place to La Morena cider mill (Siero).

Pedro Carames, president of Gascona Street Cider Producers’ Association, organiser of the event, stressed the importance of celebrating this festival and announced his intention to recognise the founders of the event on its 25th anniversary.
