The new edition of Cider World has just taken place on 26th and 27th April in Frankfurt, Germany. This year, for the first time in Europe, there was a seminar led by the ciderologist Gabe Cook with the aim of obtaining the first level of certification as a Cider Professional or Pommelier.

Este año ha contado, por primera vez en Europa, con un seminario conducido por el sidrólogo Gabe Cook con el fin de obtener el primer nivel en la certificación como Profesional de Sidra o Pommelier.

This is the seventh year that this event, considered to be the most important cider fair in the world, is held in cooperation with the Geisenheim University, being the United States the Guest of Honour this time. With almost a hundred exhibitors and nearly two hundred products, it is an essential meeting point for producers, traders, restaurateurs and cider experts from regions and countries all over the world.

Es el séptimo año que este evento, considerado como la feria sidrera más importante del mundo, se celebra en cooperación con la Universidad Geisenheim, teniendo en esta ocasión a los Estados Unidos como Invitado de Honor. Con una participación de casi un centenar de expositores y cerca de doscientos productos, es un punto de encuentro imprescindible para productores, comerciantes, restauradores y expertos sidreros de regiones y países de todo el mundo.

On Friday 26th April, after the opening of Cider World ’24 and the tasting of the products participating in the event, the awards ceremony took place in the Astor Film Lounge MyZeil.

The following day, Saturday 27th April, the 16th Frankfurt International Cider Fair was held, an exhibition with the participation of professionals and the general public, master classes and pairings.

The Cider World Fair in Frankfurt represents a unique combination of scientific analysis and international experience and is regarded as the world’s leading trade fair for cider, known in Germany as «apfelwein».

It is one of the most important international platforms for the presentation, tasting and sale of cider, bringing together producers, retailers, restaurateurs, sommeliers, representatives of the trade press and interested consumers from Germany and all over the world.

La Feria Mundial de Sidra de Frankfurt representa una combinación única de análisis científico y experiencia internacional y está considerada como la feria mundial líder de sidra, conocida en Alemania como “vino de manzana”.

Es una de las plataformas internacionales más importantes para la presentación, degustación y venta de esta bebida, donde se reúnen cada año productores, minoristas, restauradores, sumilleres, representantes de la prensa especializada y consumidores interesados ​​de Alemania y de todo el mundo.

This is the sixth time that the renowned competition has been held in cooperation with the University of Geisenheim, one of the world’s leading universities in the field of beverage technology. An international jury of experts tastes and evaluates all products according to the proven 120-point CiderWorld scheme, which takes into account the specific characteristics of each country and region.

This year’s edition took place on 28th and 29th April, with the first day of the awards ceremony in the Astor Film Lounge MyZeil. The following day, the 15th Frankfurt International Cider Fair was held at the Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten, where The Meadow Orchard was the Guest of Honour 2023.

Es ésta la sexta vez que el renombrado concurso se lleva a cabo en cooperación con la Universidad de Geisenheim, una de las universidades más importantes del mundo en el campo de la tecnología de las bebidas. Un jurado internacional de expertos cata y evalúa todos los productos según el acreditado esquema de 120 puntos de CiderWorld, que tiene en cuenta las tipicidades específicas de cada país y región.

La edición de este año tuvo lugar los días 28 y 29 de abril, siendo la primera jornada de entrega de premios en el Astor Film Lounge MyZeil. Al día siguiente se celebró la XV Feria Internacional de Sidra de Frankfurt en el Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten, donde The Meadow Orchard fue el Invitado de Honor 2023.

On this occasion, Grupo El Gaitero’s Asturian ciders were awarded for the second consecutive year with nine prizes: two gold medals, three silver medals and four diplomas of honour.

The Gold Medals went to El Gaitero Etiqueta Negra, and Gaitero Spanish Cider in its 100% Apple version, while the Silver Medals went to Pomarina Brut, Brut Nature Valle Ballina and Fernandez, and to the iconic El Gaitero Extra. Finally, El Gaitero Natural, El Gaitero Rosé, Spring Cider and the delicate Sidra de Hielo 1898 received the Diplomas of Honour.

En esta ocasión, las sidras asturianas de Grupo El Gaitero fueron galardonadas por segundo año consecutivo con nueve reconocimientos: dos medallas de oro, tres medallas de plata y cuatro diplomas de honor.

Las Medallas de Oro recayeron en El Gaitero Etiqueta Negra, y Gaitero Spanish Cider en su versión 100% Manzana, mientras que las Medallas de Plata fueron para Pomarina Brut, Brut Nature Valle Ballina y Fernández, y en la icónica El Gaitero Extra. Por último, El Gaitero Natural, El Gaitero Rosé, Spring Cider y la delicada Sidra de Hielo 1898, recibieron los Diplomas de Honor.

On the other hand, the Asturian businessman Eduardo Vazquez Coto – aka «Cider Guerrilla» – was distinguished as «Cider Star of the Year», for his fourteen years working in the international cider industry and for the success of the first International Cider Summit, recently held in Gijon.

After a two-year break, Frankfurt’s world’s leading apple wine trade fair was back from June 3rd to 12th. 185 products from 75 exhibitors in 15 countries were present at the fair this year, being Norway, one of the youngest cider regions in the world, the guest country.

Industry professionals from across Europe, locals and internationals come together in Frankfurt to celebrate one of the city’s most famous beverages. Cider, or apple wine – known locally as «Ebbelwoi» – has played a significant part in the social and commercial life of Frankfurt for generations. Cider World Frankfurt is an event for both industry professionals and members of the public.

Tras un paréntesis de dos años, la principal feria mundial del vino de manzana (Apfelwein) de Frankfurt volvió a celebrarse del 3 al 12 de junio. 185 productos de 75 expositores en 15 países estuvieron presentes en la feria este año, siendo Noruega, una de las regiones sidreras más jóvenes del mundo, el país invitado.

Profesionales del sector de toda Europa, locales e internacionales, se reúnen en Frankfurt para celebrar una de las bebidas más famosas de la ciudad. La sidra, o el vino de manzana -conocido localmente como «Ebbelwoi»- ha desempeñado un papel importante en la vida social y comercial de la ciudad durante generaciones. Éste es un evento dirigido tanto a los profesionales del sector como al público en general.

Although Germany is renowned for its beer, Frankfurt is the home of first-rate cider. Apple winemaking has been a major part of the identity of Frankfurt am Main since the 16th century. It’s produced by juicing apples and then fermenting the juice with yeast. A small amount of juice from the fruit of the Speierling tree is sometimes also added.

Exhibitors hail from countries all over Europe, including Denmark, England, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Norway, Austria, Spain and Ukraine. The German representatives are mainly from Frankfurt and the surrounding region but also Berlin, Bavaria, Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland.

Aunque Alemania es conocida por su cerveza, Frankfurt es la cuna de una sidra de primera calidad. La elaboración de vino de manzana ha sido una parte importante de su identidad desde el siglo XVI. Se produce exprimiendo manzanas y fermentando después el zumo con levadura. A veces también se añade una pequeña cantidad de zumo del fruto del árbol Speierling.

Los expositores proceden de países de toda Europa, como Dinamarca, Inglaterra, Estonia, Francia, Irlanda, Italia, Letonia, Luxemburgo, Noruega, Austria, España y Ucrania. Los representantes alemanes proceden principalmente de Frankfurt y sus alrededores, pero también de Berlín, Baviera, Brandeburgo, Renania del Norte-Westfalia y el Sarre.

The Expo has been one of the core elements of Cider World from the very beginning. It is aimed at trade visitors and end consumers alike and is a meeting place for experts and the trade press to find out about the latest developments and innovations and to maintain direct contact with the wineries.

Interested consumers could also get to know the international world of cider all day long at the Cider World Market, where food trucks and cider stands provide their guests with selected specialties.

La Expo ha sido uno de los elementos centrales de Cider World desde el principio. Está dirigida tanto a los visitantes profesionales como a los consumidores finales y es un lugar de encuentro para que los expertos y la prensa especializada se enteren de los últimos avances e innovaciones y mantengan un contacto directo con las bodegas.

On June 10h, the awards ceremony was once again broadcast live from Astor Film Lounge, where Asturian ciders won medals in four out of the seven categories: Cider Still and Sparkling, Perry & Flavored Cider Still and Sparkling, Ice Cider, Non-Alcoholic Cider and Brandy.

El 10 de junio, la entrega de premios volvió a ser retransmitida en directo desde el Astor Film Lounge, donde las sidras asturianas obtuvieron medallas en cuatro de las siete categorías: Sidra Natural y Espumosa, Sidra Natural y Espumosa de Sabores, Sidra de Hielo, Sidra sin Alcohol y Brandy.

CIDER WORLD’ 20

The Cider World’20 Frankfurt Cider Fair was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 restrictions, so all exhibitors will present themselves and their products online from 13th to 30th August.

The awards ceremony was broadcasted this month from the Astor Film Lounge, where the best ciders were awarded in five categories.

Asturian Eduardo Vazquez Coto, from Guerrilla Imports and Cider World ambassador since 2009, presented the award in the category of Best Cider Still, which was given to German cider Boskoop by Weidmann & Groh.

Norwegian Solvsider by Apal Sideri, was awarded as Best Sparkling Cider and another German cider, Q18 by Prosequ, was the winner in the category of Best Sparkling Cider, Flavored & Mixed.

Gabe Cook, the Ciderologist, presented the Best Cider Flavored & Mixed and Fruit Wine award, won by English producer Hogan’s with their Libertine Cider.

Eventually, there were two winners in the Best Ice Cider category: Danish Kvasir 2014 by Horn Cider, and Norwegian Iseple by Egge Gaard.

Grupo El Gaitero was the most awarded Asturian cider. They got two Silver Medals in the categories of Cider Still for their Sidra Natural and Cider Flavoured & Mixed for Red Grape. They were also awarded with four Honour Medals: one in the Ice Cider category for 1898; and three in the Sparkling Cider category for El Gaitero Black Label, Gaitero 100% Apple 1/3 and Pomarina Brut.

Another Asturian cider, M. Busto by Mayador, won the Gold Medal as Best Eco-friendly Sweet Cider. This product, which was launched two years ago with great success, it is characterized by its floral and fruity aromas, fixed acidity and sweet notes. It has a long and lingering finish with well-integrated bubbles. Bodegas Mayador was also awarded with the Honour Medal for its natural cider M. Busto.

On the other hand, the Global Cider Forum will be held in the same German city from 30th September to 1st October. This platform will bring together cidermaking experts from all around the world to discuss the latest news and opportunities for this global drink success.

La Feria de Sidra de Frankfurt Cider World’20, se celebrará este año de forma virtual debido a las restricciones impuestas por el COVID-19, así que todos los participantes se presentarán a ellos mismos y a sus productos online desde el 13 al 30 de agosto.

La ceremonia de entrega de premios fue retransmitida este mes desde el Astor Film Lounge, donde se premió a las mejores sidras en cinco categorías.

El asturiano Eduardo “Ciderguerrilla” Vázquez Coto, de Guerrilla Imports y embajador de Cider World desde 2009, presentó el premio de la categoría Mejor Sidra No Espumosa, que correspondió a la sidra germana Boskoop, de Weidmann & Groh.

Finalmente, hubo dos ganadores en la categoría Mejor Sidra de Hielo: la danesa Kvasir 2014, de Horn Cider, y la noruega Iseple, de Egge Gaard.

Grupo El Gaitero fue la sidra asturiana más galardonada. Recibieron dos Medallas de Plata en las categorías Sidra No Espumosa, por su Sidra Natural, y en Sidra Saborizada y Mixta, por Red Grape. También fueron premiados con cuatro Medallas de Honor: una en la categoría Sidra de Hielo, por 1898; y tres en la categoría Sidra Espumosa, por El Gaitero Etiqueta Negra, Gaitero 100% Apple 1/3 y Pomarina Brut.

Otra sidra asturiana, M. Busto de Mayador, se alzó con la Medalla de Oro a la Mejor Sidra Dulce Ecológica. Este producto, que salió a la venta con gran éxito hace dos años, se caracteriza  por sus aromas florales y frutales, acidez fija y notas dulces. Tiene un sabor final largo y persistente con perfecta integración en la burbuja. Bodegas Mayador también fue distinguida con la Medalla de Honor por su sidra natural M. Busto.

Por otro lado, el Global Cider Forum se celebrará en la misma ciudad alemana del 30 de septiembre al 1 de octubre. Esta plataforma reunirá a llagareros expertos de todo el mundo para debatir sobre las últimas noticias y oportunidades para el éxito de esta bebida global.
