The XL edition of the Regional Natural Cider Competition took place on 16th September as part of the activities of the Virgen del Portal festivities in Villaviciosa.

La XL edición del Concurso Regional de Sidra Natural tuvo lugar el día 16 de septiembre dentro de las actividades de las Fiestas de la Virgen del Portal de Villaviciosa.

Only seven cidermakers out of the 38 participants reached the final, following the eliminations carried out on a previous day, which included a chemical analysis to ensure that the criteria stipulated in the current legislation regarding the quality of natural cider were met. In the words of Ovidio Fernandez, coordinator of the SERIDA (Regional Agri-Food Research and Development Service) team, this process is unique in this type of competition.

Sólo siete llagares de los 38 participantes llegaron a la final, tras los descartes realizados en una jornada anterior, que incluyeron un análisis químico para asegurar que se cumplieran los criterios estipulados en la legislación vigente respecto a la calidad de la sidra natural. En palabras de Ovidio Fernández, coordinador del equipo del SERIDA (Servicio Regional de Investigación y Desarrollo Agroalimentario), este proceso es único en este tipo de concursos.

The winning cider in this edition was Val d’Ornon, from Menendez cider mill in Gijon, followed by Foncueva cider from Sariego and Camin cider from Trabanco cider mill in Gijón.

La sidra ganadora en esta edición fue Val d’Ornon, del llagar gijonés Menéndez, seguida de sidra Foncueva de Sariego y sidra Camín del llagar Trabanco de Gijón.

The town council also wanted to pay tribute to one of the great contributors to the Asturian cider world, Laudino Riva Collada from Villaviciosa, who passed away last year.

El ayuntamiento de Villaviciosa también quiso rendir homenaje a uno de los grandes colaboradores del mundo de la sidra asturiana, el maliayés Laudino Riva Collada, fallecido el año pasado.

On Tuesday 17th September, Salvador Ondo won the 31st edition of the Villaviciosa Cider Pouring Competition, which had 28 participants, followed by Wilkin Aquiles and Jorge Vargas, in second and third place respectively.

El martes 17 de septiembre, Salvador Ondó se impuso en la XXXI edición del Concurso de Escanciadores de Villaviciosa, que contó con 28 participantes, seguido por Wilkin Aquiles y Jorge Vargas, en segundo y tercer lugar respectivamente.
