The traditional Gijon Natural Cider Festival took place this year between 23rd August and 1st September.

The festival began with the opening of the Cider and Apple Market on the 23rd, with 26 stands offering the public all kinds of apple-related products: sweet and savoury delicacies, crafts, jewellery and drinks. On Tuesday 27th, the prizes were awarded to the best stalls, with the winners being Mondo Manzana – the best decorated stall -, Oleum – the best presented merchandise – and Pastelería Carpe Diem – the most innovative product. Ventolin Artesania also received a special mention for its ‘apple bag’.

La tradicional Fiesta de la Sidra Natural de Gijón tuvo lugar este año entre los días 23 de agosto y 1 de septiembre.

La fiesta comenzó con la apertura del Mercadín de la Sidra y la Manzana el día 23, con 26 stands que ofrecieron al público todo tipo de productos relacionados con la manzana: manjares dulces y salados, artesanía, joyas y bebidas. El martes 27 se realizó la entrega de premios a los mejores puestos, siendo los ganadores Mondo Manzana- puesto más prestoso-, Oleum– mercancía mejor presentada- y Pastelería Carpe Diem– producto más novedoso. Asimismo, Ventolín Artesanía recibió una mención especial por su “bolso manzana”.

On Thursday 29th, the pre-selection of the cider candidates for best cider of the year took place, as well as the 31st edition of the Cider Pouring Competition. Salvador Ondo was crowned winner of this competition for the sixth time, followed by Reynaldo Belen and Wilkin Aquiles. Isabela Padron was the winner in both the categories Best Local and Under-25 Pourer. The award for Best Cider Bar went to La Montera Picona and the Cutest Label was for Sidra Acebal.

El jueves 29 tuvo lugar la preselección de las sidras candidatas a mejor sidra del año, así como la XXXI edición del Concurso de Escanciadores. Salvador Ondó se coronó por sexta vez como ganador de este concurso, seguido por Reynaldo Belén y Wilkin Aquiles. Isabela Padrón resultó vencedora tanto en la categoría Mejor Escanciador Local como en la Sub-25. El galardón a la Mejor Sidrería recayó en La Montera Picona y la Etiqueta Más Guapina correspondió a Sidra Acebal.

On Friday 30th, the most multitudinous celebration of the festival was held, in which an attempt was made to beat the World Record for Simultaneous Cider Pouring. This time it could not be achieved either, as 893 people were short of the 9,796 participants in 2022.

El viernes día 30 se celebró la celebración más multitudinaria de la fiesta, en la que se intentó batir el Récord Mundial de Escanciado Simultáneo de Sidra. En esta ocasión tampoco pudo lograrse, ya que, por 893 personas, no pudieron superarse los 9.796 participantes de  2022.

The following day, 31 August, the protagonists were the Cancios de Chigre, typical Asturian songs by the Sociedad Torner, as well as the master class of cider pouring by Abraham Castellanos and Loreto Garcia.

Al día siguiente, 31 de agosto, los protagonistas fueron los Cancios de Chigre, cantares típicos asturianos de la mano de la Sociedad Torner, así como la clase magistral de escanciado de la mano de Abraham Castellanos y Loreto García.

Finally, on 1st September, the Golden Barrel was given, an award the cidermakers offer every year to a relevant person for his or her career in the sector, and which this year went to Jose Enrique Cardin Zaldivar, former manager of Grupo El Gaitero.

Finalmente, el 1 de septiembre, se produjo la entrega del Tonel de Oro, galardón que cada año entregan los llagareros a una persona relevante por su trayectoria en el sector, y que este año recayó en José Enrique Cardín Zaldívar, anterior gerente de Grupo El Gaitero.

Afterwards, the cider tasting of the 19 participating cider makers began, the funds of which were entirely donated to Galban Association, part of the Spanish Federation of Parents of Children with Cancer.

Posteriormente, comenzó la degustación de sidra de los 19 llagares participantes, cuya recaudación fue donada íntegramente a la Asociación Galbán, que forma parte de la Federación Española de Padres de Niños con Cáncer.

The event culminated with the awarding of the Praise of Gold, recognition for the best cider of the festival, to M. Busto cider, from Sidra Mayador.

El evento culminó con la entrega del Elogio de Oro, reconocimiento a la mejor sidra de la fiesta, a sidra M. Busto, de Sidra Mayador.
