IV VALLESECO REGIONAL CIDER FAIR/ IV Feria Regional de Sidra de Valleseco

On Sunday 24th May, the town of Valleseco became the cider capital of the Canary Islands with the celebration of the 4th Regional Cider Fair, organised by the local council. The day was dedicated to the promotion, tasting and sale of ciders, with live music, food and activities for the whole family. The event has now established itself as one of the main highlights of the archipelago’s agri-food calendar and has made the town the true cider capital of the Canary Islands.

The Fair aims to boost local production, promote the consumption of locally sourced products and encourage the professionalisation of the sector. It also represents an excellent opportunity for producers to expand their network of contacts and showcase their products.

A special guest at the event was the renowned oenologist Jose Antonio Norniella, an advisor to more than 40 cider mills covered by the Protected Designation of Origin for Asturian Cider. During the event, the public had the opportunity to taste the award-winning ciders produced in Valleseco, alongside a carefully curated selection of Asturian ciders with Designation of Origin and international varieties. The programme also included the 4th Regional Cider Tasting of the Canary Islands, with four sessions open to the public upon prior registration.

A notable new feature of this edition was the “Mixtura Sidrera” workshop, an event dedicated to the use of cider in mixology, where industry professionals created cocktails and innovative concoctions featuring Canarian cider as the star ingredient, demonstrating the endless possibilities of what is known as the “liquid gold of Valleseco”.

Although Canarian cider was virtually unknown a few years ago, today Valleseco leads its production in the archipelago, with seven cider mills and 28 different varieties. This fair, together with the Agrocanarias Official Cider Competition, are key to the process of turning cider and apples into drivers of local development and regional gastronomy.

This year’s cider fair highlighted the role played by women in the Canary Islands’ cider sector, who are increasingly involved in the production, marketing, promotion and processing of cider, leading business projects, driving new lines of innovation and bringing a modern and sustainable vision to a product deeply rooted in the local area and the primary sector.

Cider was the centre of attention. Sidra Tuscany enjoyed steady demand, and El Lagar de Valleseco demonstrated why it has won over 25 national and international awards. The innovative creations from Valle Secreto also generated excitement, surprising attendees with ciders flavoured with fig, kiwi or lemon.

One of the major highlights of this year’s event was the cider-based vermouth produced by Sidras Fierro. The 200 bottles of Sidermut set aside for the fair sold out almost entirely during the day. Regional representation once again featured prominently at this fourth edition, with ciders from Tenerife and La Palma, including those produced by Castro & Magan and Sidra La Mirla.
