XIII CIDER FAIR IN A ESTRADA/ XIII Feira da Sidra en A Estrada

On Saturday 6th June, A Estrada hosted another successful edition of its Feira da Sidra, cementing the town’s status as the cider capital of Galicia.

The event, now in its thirteenth year, attracted a record number of visitors, with all 4,000 commemorative glasses put on sale selling out. On an 80-metre-long bar, visitors were able to sample 5,000 litres – 1,000 more than at the previous event – from a total of 24 cider houses from Spain, Portugal, Latvia, the Czech Republic and France.

Throughout the day, culinary offerings from a dozen local restaurants and bars were also served, and visitors could enjoy traditional music.

The cider culture of Estrada was represented by the ciders Peroja, Rabiosa, Camino, Lopez Pampin and A Casa da Sidra, taking advantage of the showcase provided by the fair to continue promoting local production.

The 13th Cider Fair also featured Bereziartua and Astarbe from San Sebastian; Kuartango from Alava; Martintxonea from Navarre; Somarroza from Cantabria; Carral and Sidra del Agüelo from Leon; Solleiro, Cabueñes and Sidra Buznego from Asturias; Alfa and Sidra Raia and Celta Endovelico, from Portugal; Opily Jabko, from the Czech Republic; Mr Plume, from Latvia; Maeloc, from Chantada; Andaina PSM, from Ordes; Sidra Salvaje, from Riotorto;  and Val de Traba, from Noia.

There was also time for awards. The Basque consortium Sagardoaren Lurraldea received this year’s Grolo de Ouro, presented by the Maceira e Sidra Association, an accolade with which A Estrada pays tribute each year to individuals or groups who stand out for their track record and for promoting the cider sector.

The attendance figures seem to vindicate the work carried out over recent years and reinforce A Estrada’s position as the cider capital of Galicia and as an essential fixture on the gastronomic and tourist calendar. A great festival that once again demonstrated that the Feira da Sidra has reached a scale that now transcends borders.
