XXVI GASCONA CIDER TASTING/ XXVI Preba de la Sidra de Gascona

On Sunday 7th June, the Gascona Cider Tasting attracted the largest crowd in its 26-year history, with around 11,000 attendees sampling 12,000 bottles of cider – some 73,000 cider glasses– from 17 Asturian cideries.

The event, designated a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, was created to celebrate the arrival of the year’s new cider and has become one of the major popular celebrations in Asturias, and specifically in Oviedo, which hopes the event will be recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

This year’s edition also expanded its programme to a full week of cultural, gastronomic and musical activities centred on cider and Asturian heritage.

The 2026 “Friend of Gascona” Award was presented to Oviedo’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2031, in recognition of the city’s work in promoting culture. The award strengthened the link between Asturian cider culture and Oviedo’s cultural project, with Gascona serving as a venue for people to meet, socialise and celebrate one of Asturias’ most iconic traditions.

Muñiz was the winner of the Official Competition, followed by Castañon and JR, thanks to the votes of the professional jury. Viuda de Angelon won the Popular Award, decided by the attending public, whilst La Llarada and Muñiz came second and third respectively.

At the craft cider competition, the Gijon-based association El Culete Moyau claimed victory for the second year running.

Founded just over a year ago, it already has more than a hundred members, many of whom make homemade cider in the municipality of Gijon, although they estimate that there may be another hundred or so producers in the area whom they hope to recruit to the association.

On this occasion, the public were able to sample four different varieties, selected by the association to cater for the diverse tastes of those present. These consisted of a sweet, smooth cider made by Manuel Castro; a bitter, dry one, the work of Alejandro Pidal; a well-balanced one, aged for a year, made by Rufino Pérez; and a final one, aged for two years, with more body and acidity, produced by Juan Rea.

Now they are already thinking about the Mieres competition, the next event for home producers where there will be only a professional judging panel and, in the words of Rufino Perez, “we’ll have to choose a cider that’s full-bodied and robust, at the peak of its flavour”.

And to continue raising its profile, there’s nothing better than the council’s home-made cider competition, which is already being organised. It will take place on 22nd August in the Town Hall, as part of the Gijon Natural Cider and Apple Festival. Last year was the first edition, and 68 ciders were entered into the competition; this year, they expect no fewer.

The most eagerly awaited moment of the afternoon was the unveiling of the competition’s promotional poster, designed by Gijon-based designer Leticia Gonzalez Díaz. The designer championed the artisanal production of cider — from the harvest to the corking — and thanked the cidermakers for all the technical insights they provided, which helped her create the poster. She also praised the fact that, in cider-making as in many other processes such as graphic design, “the value of the human factor over the use of Artificial Intelligence”.
