PDO CIDER OF ASTURIAS SALON’26/ Salón DOP Sidra de Asturias’26

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Sidra de Asturias held the 15th edition of its Cider Fair on Wednesday 17th June in Pola de Siero, an event that serves as the official launch of this year’s new harvest and as a gathering for the entire Asturian cider sector.

During the event, the winners of the annual competition were announced, and the Cider Grower of the Year was honoured. The event brought together representatives from the 32 cider mills registered under the designation, around 400 cider growers, as well as restaurateurs, distributors and industry professionals.

The awards recognise the finest ciders in the categories of traditional natural cider, filtered natural cider and sparkling natural cider. The event also served to reveal the name of the new Ambassador for Asturian Cider, a distinction that recognises commitment to and promotion of cider culture.

The Gijon-based cider mill Contrueces won the top prize in the traditional natural category, followed by Quelo, from Tiñana (Siero), and Val de Boides, from Castañón Cider (Quintueles, Villaviciosa). The cider mill El Gobernador (Oles, Villaviciosa) emerged as the winner in both the filtered natural cider category, with ‘Españar’, and the sparkling category, with ‘Emilio Martínez (EM)’.

El Gobernador has thus become the cidery with the most PDO awards to its name, bringing its total number of official prizes to sixteen (ten for best filtered cider, five for sparkling cider and one for traditional cider).

The event also served to recognise the career of apple grower Juan Antonio Junco, who was honoured with the award reserved for apple producers, and to appoint Montse Tome, former coach of the women’s national football team, as ambassador for the Sidra de Asturias PDO.

The Regulatory Council has several short- and medium-term objectives in mind. Firstly, it aims to account for 80 per cent of total cider consumption in Asturias by increasing the area under cultivation and the production of Asturian apples. Secondly, the introduction of ice cider with a designation of origin is set to take place before the end of the year. And finally, plans are in place to establish new headquarters that will meet the institution’s operational needs and become a centre of excellence for visitors and tourists interested in cider culture.

Since its first edition in 2009 to the present day, Castañon cider has topped the PDO awards rankings in the natural category (with five titles in 2015, 2016, 2020, 2021 and 2024).

In second place, with two gold medals, are Contrueces cider (2023 and 2026), Prado y Pedregal (La Morena cider, 2017 and 2025) and Zythos (Herminio cider, 2009 and 2013). Winning one gold medal each are Sopeña (Martinez Sopeña Hnos, 2019), Piñera (2018), Quelo (2022), Novalin (Orizon cider, 2014), Prau Monga (Viuda de Angelon cider, 2012), El Santu (Canal cider, 2011) and Escalada (Asturiana de Vinos, 2010).

As for filtered cider, the leader is Españar (Martinez Sopeña Hnos, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2024, 2025 and 2026), followed by Grupo El Gaitero (El Gaitero, 2023 and Pomarina, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020). Ramos del Valle (Fran cider) was the winner in 2022; Villacubera (Cortina cider) in 2014; and Escalada (Asturiana de Vinos) in 2010.

The winner in the sparkling cider category is Grupo El Gaitero (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024).
