GLINTCAP 2026

GLINTCAP 2026

The 20th edition of GLINTCAP (Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition) was held from May 13th to 16th, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, coinciding with the region’s traditional Cider Week. Considered the world’s largest cider competition, this 20th anniversary event drew more than 1,100 commercial and non-commercial entries from all corners of the globe.

The judging, in which approximately 90 judges evaluated more than 1,000 samples of commercial and non-commercial ciders from around the world, was organized by the Michigan Cider Association.

Asturian cider strengthened its profile, with Tano Collada playing a prominent role during the event with a presentation focused on the family cider-making tradition and the history of El Gaitero. The winemaker recounted how both his father and grandfather worked at the Villaviciosa-based company and also recalled the custom of making cider at home, thus linking the great Asturian cider industry with the region’s domestic and cultural traditions.

Asturian Eduardo Vazquez Coto, who described that presentation as “one of the most human moments of the trip,” helped convey to international producers and judges the central idea that Asturian cider culture is not merely a product, but also family memory, landscape, and generational transmission.

His involvement with the Michigan event began in 2013, when he first introduced Asturian natural cider to the competition, defining its characteristics and paving the way for its inclusion in future editions. At that time, he explains, Asturias was scarcely recognized internationally as a cider-producing region, and Asturian cider was often confused with that of the Basque Country. Today, the situation has changed thanks to nearly two decades of continuous participation in trade shows, competitions, and professional gatherings in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Nordic countries, which has helped put Asturian cider “on the international professional map.”

During this edition of the event, he also gave a talk on how those early experiences in the United States later influenced the creation of some of the sector’s leading European competitions. Among them, he cited the Cider World championship in Frankfurt, launched in 2018 during his time in Germany, and the Sagardo Forum championship, designed in 2017 and of which he is currently the technical director.
